June 2019: new collaborations

This spring, Andrew Nogal and four of his favorite colleagues came together to form the Chicago Wind Project (CWP), which is devoted to collaborating with composers, performing modern scores to a high degree of excellence, and pursuing inventive, creative performance opportunities as a wind quintet. CWP features flutist Constance Volk, oboist Andrew Nogal, clarinetist Katie Schoepflin Jimoh, bassoonist Ben Roidl-Ward, and hornist Matt Oliphant. The quintet has recorded music by Aaron Holloway-Nahum, Alex Nante, and Pierce Gradone, with release dates TBD.

Andrew and Ben also play – along with dynamite clarinetist Andy Hudson – in Ritual Action, a reed trio championing modern classics of the repertoire and commissioning daring new music for oboe, clarinet, and bassoon. Ben and the Andys assembled in 2017 as three Chicago-based alumni of the Lucerne Festival Academy, the training program founded by Pierre Boulez. Ritual Action is currently booking tour dates for the 2019-20 season. Download their info sheet and group bio here. Please email Andrew Nogal for details on presenting Ritual Action at your school, conservatory, or concert hall.

March 2018 News: commissioning project, new ensemble

Introducing the grossman ensemble

I am pleased to announce that I have been invited to join the Grossman Ensemble, a project of the Chicago Center for Contemporary Composition, which brings together 13 of the nation’s leading performers of contemporary music.

Commissioning project: pierce gradone

In winter 2018, a generous, anonymous benefactor has made it possible for me to commission a brand new piece of solo oboe repertoire for the very first time.

I’m excited to announce that Pierce Gradone will be composing me a new piece for oboe and piano to be premiered during calendar year 2019. I look forward to working closely with Pierce throughout the process and sharing excerpts and insights with you as we move forward!
